Mass Texting: Pack a Punch into Your Messages
A text is only as powerful as its content. Here are three tips for writing short and sweet messages that compel customers to act. Fun fact: These tips will save you time and money, too.
1. Track Your Message Length
If customers wanted an email-sized message, they wouldn’t text you.
Lengthy messages immediately lose customers’ attention and potentially ramp up your usage. That’s why you need to keep an eye on your character counter while typing messages.
Staying below 130 characters is what we recommend to hit that sweet spot of getting your idea across while still being helpful. Keeping your message at 130 characters also gives you a buffer if you haven’t texted the customer before (since an opt-out message will automatically be included).
The more you know: A "text" is one message up to 160 characters, and a "message" can be multiple texts.
2. Paste Links to More Details
When in doubt, share a link.
You don’t have to share everything in the message, but you do need to grab customers’ attention. Links help you do just that, especially when they go to:
Your product or payment page
Your disclosures
An announcement or blog post
And anything else helpful
Links like these keep you from squeezing everything into one text, plus offer your customers a helpful next step. Just be sure to surround your links with an explanation of where you’re sending customers, so you don’t trigger spam filters.
3. Use Images to Make Your Point
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Why explain something when you can show it? A visual is more likely to get someone’s attention, especially when you’re:
Introducing a new product or service
Breaking down instructions
Comparing and contrasting a customer’s options
Documenting a completed project or service
The easier it is for a customer to understand your message with a visual, the more likely they are to take your desired action.
