SMS for Promotions: Make Them Pop
SMS promotions have the power to be your most profitable channel for sales and marketing, but they can also annoy customers if you miss the mark. Here’s what successful promotions do best, and what to avoid.
1. Use the Super-Secret Formula
Most effective promotions do 3 things well:
Show excitement
Create urgency
Provide an easy next step
There are lots of ways to do this, but here’s one example that breaks it down.
2. Make it Personal
Customers want offers, but they don’t want to be bombarded.
Space out your promotions, and only text opt-in contacts
Use Merge Fields to add in personalized data, or send different messages to different groups of contacts—perhaps segmented by previous purchases
Make customers feel like a VIP, and they’ll buy more
3. Think like Mobile Carriers
Your promotions have to make it to contacts to be effective, and mobile carriers are on the lookout for spam.
A few tips to make sure your messages get delivered:
Avoid ALL CAPS, dollar signs ($), and excessive emojis
Change up your text when sending to large groups
Don’t end a text in a URL, include it in the middle of the message
